Kahurangi Estate Regional Series aims to capture the essence of several well know NZ wine-growing regions. Montepulciano is not commonly grown in New Zealand but has found a home in the heart of Upper Moutere with small plantings of this Central Italian classic.
Winemaking
Harvest threw just about everything at us to challenge even the most seasoned grower. From a cool, damp flowering period to a beautiful hot January followed by exceptionally wet February, with significant disease pressure throughout. Fortunately, from early March onwards, fine weather returned and remained steady. While yields were down on average, the fruit that was harvested was largely of excellent quality, and we're looking forward to some exceptional wine from this challenging vintage.
Tasting Note
It's sweetly fruited and fragrant on the nose with aromas of dark cherry, raspberry, thyme, tar, and florals. The palate offers juicy fruit flavours, a supple mouthfeel, and grainy tannins, making it sturdy and firm with a lengthy, fruity finish. There's an elegant minerality that lingers on the finish, complemented by subtle spice notes that add complexity and depth from Nelson's Upper Moutere.
